Indeed it is a great honor and privileged for me to share few words. Agriculture employing above 40 percent of the labour force and contributing more than 20 percent to provincial GDP, is one of the key drivers of growth and an excellent opportunity to practice the diversification into areas with comparative advantages of climate. The role of Agriculture Department is to ensure food security, poverty alleviation and to generate employment opportunities through achieving higher growth rate in this vital sector of the economy. The Department is striving for achieving the future vision i.e. to meet the challenges of 21st century and to develop a vibrant agriculture sector that promotes value addition and helps taps international market for agriculture produce. The line departments of Agriculture include Agriculture Extension, Agriculture Research System, Livestock and Dairy Development, Livestock Research and Development Department, Veterinary Research Institute, On-Farm Water Management, Soil Conservation, Agricultural Engineering, Cooperatives, Crop Reporting Services and Fisheries Department. The line departments are all mandated for ensuring effective service delivery at the farmers doorsteps and provide all out support for the promotion of agriculture sector in the province.
The history of Agriculture began thousands of years ago. The Agriculture is the backbone of Pakistan's economy and is an inevitable and integral part which ensures food security and economic up rise of the country. About 68% of the population is engaged in farming directly or indirectly through production, processing and distribution of major agriculture commodities. The key role of Agriculture Research is to augment knowledge and upturn farming technology. It elevates the understanding of the collaboration and interdependence between production systems and farming communities. This requires ample interdisciplinary approach to identify a problem, analyses to find a solution. Wheat, Maize, Sugarcane, Cotton and Rice are the most important crops grown in Pakistan. The performance of these five is crucial for the overall performance of National economy. The scientists of Agriculture Research System of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa actively seek to discover procedures that will increase crop yields, improve farmland productivity, reduce losses due to diseases and insects, evolve climate smart cultivars, and increase overall food quality. Researchers look for modes to increase the profits of poor farming community of KP and to protect the environment. Agricultural Research has completed successfully over 100 years of services to the farming community of this region by evolving various varieties in field and horticultural crops. Our scientists are engaged always to develop farmers-oriented problems research projects. Through Agriculture Research, the standard of living we enjoy today will further be improved, Insha’Allah.
